ABOUT THE SATURDAY SCHOOL

General information

Our Saturday School is open to students aged 6 to 21 years who live or study in Hackney. We run for 30 weeks a year at Stoke Newington School, Clissold Road, London N16 9EX (excluding Summer Term and Autumn Term 2020 when sessions were moved online due to COVID-19). At the end of each term we usually present a public concert that showcases our musicians’ playing in instrumental solos, ensembles, orchestral and vocal repertoire. Many of our students take ABRSM and Trinity College London exams.

The instruments currently taught in one-to-one tuition are:

Strings – violin, viola, cello, double bass

Woodwind – flute, oboe, clarinet, recorder

Brass – french horn, trumpet

Percussion

For students who do not have their own instrument, we offer instrument hire from our own collection. Look at the Fees section for information about cost.

Our curriculum since September 2019

Academic year 2019-20 was very busy for us. Based on consultation with parents/carers, students and other stakeholders and with the appointment of our first Chief Executive, we explored how we might create a broader and stronger music curriculum that supports all students, existing and new. We decided to create a plan that aims to develop a wider and more critical engagement with music and one that maximises the educational outcomes of students. This plan is designed to support the organisation’s sustainability whilst advancing our social diversity, accessibility and community engagement.

Up until July 2019, our instrumental provision consisted of one-to-one tuition, Junior Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and a music theory class. In September 2019 we introduced a considerably enhanced curriculum which includes new and old activity. The components of our new curriculum – which can be taken as part of a package or as stand-alone subjects – are:

  • One-to-one Instrumental tuition of 30 minutes
  • Extended tuition (45 minutes) for higher grade students
  • Additional spaces for existing 0ne-to-one tuition
  • Introduction of recorder one-to-one tuition
  • 6 to 8 year olds package that includes Recorder, Vocal & Musicianship and Reading & Writing
  • Primary Orchestra for Grades 0-1
  • Junior Orchestra for Grades 1-3+
  • Chamber Orchestra for Grades 3+ and above
  • Instrumental Ensembles for mixed or same instruments & Sectionals
  • Vocal Groups
  • Theory & Aural for Grades 1-3
  • Theory & Aural for Grades 4-5
  • Aural for Grades 6-8

We are hoping to be able to offer the following two subjects in the future:

  • Performance Workshop – bonus class
  • Community Choir for 16+ years

AUTUMN TERM 2020 – ONLINE TUITION – 1to1 tuition available for orchestral instruments and voice, plus group subjects. Group timetable is shown below.

For the safety of our students, their families and our staff, and to provide continuity and a rewarding musical experience, we moved all our sessions online in April 2020. We are continuing with online delivery throughout the Autumn Term 2020. We are working very hard towards returning back to live sessions from January 2021 and we will publish information on our website as soon as it is available.

We are offering heavily subsidised fees, as well as concessions, to support students and their families during the period of social distancing over the Summer Term and Autumn term 2020. Please note that our live sessions fees our higher than our online fees. Full details about our live sessions fees are listed further down this page.

We have two options available for students who wish to receive online tuition through us (see below).

To sign up, email Vicky Yannoula, Chief Executive, at hyot@hotmail.co.uk.
