ABOUT THE SATURDAY SCHOOL

We run for 30 weeks a year at Stoke Newington School, Clissold Road, London N16 9EX for students aged 6 to 21 years. There are two orchestras, Junior Orchestra runs from 10am to 10.45am and Chamber Orchestra from 11.30am to 12.20am.

There is a theory of music class from 9.25am to 10am, where students work from graded workbooks with assistance and supervision provided by the Music Director. Each Saturday, there are also 72 half hour individual instrumental tuition lessons. Instruments taught are: cello, clarinet, double bass, flute, French horn, oboe, percussion, trumpet, viola and violin.

There are also two introduction to music classes for students aged 6 to 8 years, where they learn to play the recorder and to start to read music.

Each year we present three public concert performances featuring the 2 orchestras, introduction to music groups and soloists.

Fees are subsidised. Current rates are £160 per term for instrumental tuition which also includes any orchestra and theory groups that the student attends and £95 per term for students who attend groups only.

Concessionary rates are available for families who are on a low income. These rates are £80 per term tuition and groups and £45 groups only. We have a limited number of instruments for hire to students at a rate of £45 per term, concessionary rates are £20 per term.

There is a waiting list for instrumental tuition and introduction to music classes, no previous experience of playing an instrument is required.

It is usually possible to start at one of our orchestras at the beginning of term without waiting. Students need to be around grade 1 standard for Junior Orchestra and around grade 3 standard for Chamber Orchestra.

Many of HYOT’s tuition students take music exams with ABRSM and Trinity.
